Anesthesia and Rhinoplasty

People often want to change various aspects of their appearance and as a result they will often go to have plastic surgery done. Plastic surgery has become extremely popular, especially with people who want to fix problems with the look of their nose. When having any surgery done, some type of anesthesia needs to be used. This article will look at the use of anesthesia when having rhinoplasty done.
When it comes to anesthesia being used during the rhinoplasty surgery the patient has two options. Usually local or general anesthesia is used. If it is a minor surgery then more than likely local will be used. If more detailed work is needed, then general will be used. Under local anesthesia the patient will be awake, however the area will be numb and they won't feel anything. Under general anesthesia the patient will be put to sleep and they will feel no pain or remember anything. The whole point in using anesthesia is that the patient won't feel any pain and they will be as relaxed as possible.
The anesthesia that is administered during the rhinoplasty surgery is given by the surgeon, a certified registered nurse-anesthetist (CRNA) or anesthesiologist. It is strongly recommended that patients take the time and get some information about who will be giving the anesthesia. The patient should also try to see their qualifications and certificates. Look to see if they are current. Finally the patient should also try to learn if local or general anesthesia will be used during the surgery.
The risk of using anesthesia during a nose job is very low, however some complications may occur. There are times when patients have become injured or even died while being administered anesthesia. This could be a result of an allergic reaction to the medications used or an interaction with an underlying health problem. There is a greater risk for something to go wrong under general anesthesia as opposed to local.
Before having the nose job surgery, it is very important for the patient to explain to the doctor the different drugs that they have been taking in the weeks leading up to the surgery. These would include medications, supplements, vitamins and recreational or illicit drugs. The reasons behind this are that certain drugs can interact with the anesthesia and this could result in the effects being intensified or lessened. This can significantly affect the patient and if the anesthesiologist knows the information they can adjust the levels accordingly.
All in all the use of anesthesia during a nose job is safe. The patient has the option of local or general, even though the surgeon may have a desired option. Under the anesthesia the patient won't feel anything and will be relaxed. Someone certified will be given the responsibility of administering and it is important for the patient to do their research. There are some risks associated with the use of anesthesia, however it is very small. Also the patient should inform the surgeon before the surgery the types of drugs they have been taking as it could have a negative effect.
